It was my sweet sixteen (cue the Hilary Duff soundtrack 🎶) and I had no idea I was about to experience something that would shape my entire spiritual path.
That day, my adopted grandmother took me to Elysian Fields, a mystical metaphysical shop in Sarasota, Florida. I had never had an “official” intuitive reading before, but she told me that now that I was 16, I was finally old enough to receive one. I remember walking past shelves of sage, crystals, and candles, into a quiet back room where a red-haired intuitive reader welcomed us. I wish I could remember her name, she was so kind and grounded.

My grandmother brought a notebook to take notes for me (this was 2011, before digital recordings were common in spiritual sessions), so I could fully immerse myself in the experience. And what an experience it was!
But before I share what came through in that first intuitive reading, I want to rewind a bit.
How My Spiritual Journey Began
When I was 10, a family friend became my legal guardian and welcomed me into what I now call my soul family. That shift gave me the safe, loving home I needed, and within that home, I gained a grandmother who became my first spiritual teacher.
Psstt…. Were you also the black sheep of the family? Learn more about my thoughts on being the “spiritual black sheep of the family” here.
By the time I was 14, she had already introduced me to energy healing. I took four classes in Esoteric Healing with her before I ever sat down for that first reading. I had also been practicing automatic writing and meditation, so I wasn’t new to the spiritual world, but this reading felt like an initiation. A rite of passage.
What My First Intuitive Reading Revealed
As we sat around the table, the reader began with a prayer and a gentle meditation. Then she started channeling.
She told me I had two spirit guides, one masculine, one feminine, helping me balance those energies within myself. The color green came through strongly, symbolizing emotional healing and a reminder to connect with nature whenever I felt overwhelmed.
She also shared that I had experienced alcoholism in a past life, and that I needed to be mindful of addiction in this one. That message stuck with me. Even now, at 30, I scarcely drink.
But the part that really lit something up in me? She asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said, “a writer.” She smiled and said, “You absolutely can be. But think bigger.”
That phrase think bigger has become a mantra in my life. Whenever I feel stuck, limited, or caught in scarcity mindset, I hear her voice reminding me: you’re thinking too small. And I shift.
This experience left me feeling cracked wide open. I was now fully aware of that messages from spirit were a short intention away. It made me think, what if we all lived our lives with that type of connection?
In 2011, I didn’t know that in 9 years I’d be an intuitive (akashic record) reader myself, but looking back on my first reading it’s truly amazing to see how much my life has evolved, and how much I have grown into the woman I am today.
Why This Matters for You
If you’re on a spiritual awakening journey, curious about your soul’s path, or seeking clarity through energy healing or Akashic Record readings, I want you to know: this work is sacred. It’s not about predicting the future, it’s about remembering who you are.
That first reading didn’t just give me insight. It gave me permission to dream, to heal, and to expand.
And now, as a spiritual life coach and Akashic Record reader myself, I hold space for others to experience that same kind of soul-level remembering.
Want to Gift Someone Their First Reading?
If you’ve never had a reading, or you know someone who’s spiritually curious, consider gifting them an Akashic Record reading. I would be honored to be that person for someone’s first channeling experience. It’s a beautiful and transformative gift.
Please stay tuned! I’ll be sharing the story of my second reading soon (my 18th birthday reading was wildly accurate). Be sure to sign up for my Heart of Britt email list to be notified when a new blog post is live. Just scroll down and fill out the form at the bottom of this page.
Thanks for reading this far. I hope my story reminds you to trust your path, honor your healing, and always think bigger.
With love,
Brittany
